Mangaluru, Sep 11: Senior Congress leader and advocate Padmaraj R. Poojary has been appointed as the President of Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee.
The appointment was announced on( sept. 11) Wednesday as part of the organisational restructuring exercise being carried out across 35 districts in Karnataka. The order in this regard was issued by the party’s central leadership.
Mr. Poojary, aged around 55 years, is a native of Baloor in Mudigere taluk of Chikkamagaluru district. He completed his graduation from Sacred Heart College, Madanthyar and obtained his law degree from SDM Law College, Mangaluru. He started his legal practice in the year 1995.
He has been associated with the management of Kudroli Sri Gokarna natha Temple for nearly three decades and is currently serving as its treasurer. He also serves as a general secretary in the state unit of the party. In the 2024 Parliamentary elections, he had contested from Dakshina Kannada constituency and secured more than six lakh votes.
After his appointment, Mr. Poojary is said to have interacted with media persons. It is learnt that he expressed his intention to strengthen the party organisation from the booth level.
Sources said he has indicated that his main objective is to ensure the party’s victory in all eight Assembly segments of the district in the forthcoming elections. He is also said to have mentioned that he does not have any personal aspiration to contest elections again and that his focus is on rebuilding the party organisation in the coastal district.
It is further learnt that he recalled the developmental works taken up in the district during the earlier tenures when his party was in power at the Centre.
The new appointment comes at a time when local body elections including gram panchayat, taluk panchayat, zilla panchayat and Mangaluru City Corporation elections are approaching. The party is expected to focus on coordination between district and block level units in the coming days
