Renowned Paediatrician Dr. Sudhakar Shetty Balances White Coat and Celluloid Screen
Pune/Bengaluru: In the bustling halls of Bharti Vidyapeeth and the paediatric wards of Pune, Dr. Sudhakar Shetty is renowned as a compassionate and deeply committed physician. Yet, beyond his demanding medical career, Dr. Shetty has embraced a surprising second life on the silver screen, bringing his decades of real-world experience to the Kannada film industry in a remarkable dual role as a healer and a hero.
Dr. Shetty’s journey began far from Pune in the coastal regions of Karnataka, specifically Udipi and Mangalore. After completing his schooling in Pune, he moved to Bangalore to study medicine. It was here, in 1983, that his two passions—medicine and acting—first intertwined. He enrolled in evening theatre classes, completing courses under Kannada film legend Uday Kumar and through the ‘Abhinaya Taranga’ course, alongside contemporaries like the now pan-Indian star, Prakash Raj.
Despite his deep love for performance, medicine remained his anchor. After earning his MBBS and MD, Dr. Shetty dedicated himself to his medical career for nearly 40 years, building a life of service in Pune. He has worked at KEM Hospital, headed Bharti Vidyapeeth, runs outreach programmes, trains future doctors, and maintains his clinic on MG Road.
An Unexpected Return to Acting
Dr. Shetty’s re-entry into cinema came unexpectedly two years ago when Director Varrat Bharadwaj called him with a singular request: he needed a credible, practising physician to play a professor in his film, Hey Prabhu. The role, which positioned him as a strict but caring mentor to his students, was a perfect fit, leveraging his authentic medical gravitas.
This paved the way for his first cinematic role in Hey Prabhu, released on November 7, 2025. The film, directed by Bharadwaj, centers on a young doctor who chooses to serve in a medically underserved village. The narrative explores pressing social issues, from real estate greed to the challenges facing rural healthcare, earning praise as a “gentle film about quiet transition.”
Focusing on Social Responsibility
Dr. Shetty’s involvement is more than just acting; he co-produced Hey Prabhu through his own banner, Macard Movies, underscoring his belief in the film’s social mission to spotlight rural health issues and the ethical challenges of modern medicine.
He is strict about his film choices, accepting only “doctor roles” that align with his real-time vocation, stating, “I can only be a real-life doctor. And I can give a message.” His second film, ChargeSheet, also features him in a central doctor’s role dealing with a real-life crime, and his third venture, Riddhi, is also slated for a medical setting.
Highlighting the film’s resonance, the rights to Hey Prabhu were recently acquired by the Air India Union Services for in-flight projection for an entire month—a rare honour that elevates the film’s public health dialogue.
“My films are not pure entertainment,” Dr. Shetty concludes, “they are a platform to spark dialogues about ethics, health equity and social responsibility. I want to die as a doctor, perhaps treating patients or acting but my life is service.” For Dr. Sudhakar Shetty, the white coat and the spotlight are simply two different avenues for the same lifelong mission: service.
