Veteran advocate Bellipady Laxminarayan Rai (94) passed away on Thursday, December 25, 2025, at around 10.30 p.m. at his daughter’s residence in Karangalpady, Mangaluru, following age-related illness.
Professionally known as B. L. N. Rai, he studied law at Madras Law College and, after obtaining his B.A. B.L. degree, began his legal practice in Puttur in 1962, where he handled both civil and criminal cases. In his career spanning 64 years, he was widely respected for his integrity, dedication, and commitment to the legal profession. After his retirement, he donated his entire collection of law books to the newly established court at Belthangady. He was an active member of the Bar Association and had earlier served as an office bearer of Lions Club.
He is survived by his sons Udayabhanu Rai and Sudesh Rai, and daughters Prof. Sharmila Rai and Dr. Sapna Sandeep. His wife, Smt. Nalini Rai, predeceased him in 2022. The last rites were performed on Friday, December 26, at 2.30 p.m. at the Kadri Crematorium
